Page and widgets

Widgets, the regular and compact layouts, the content view, search, clean mode, and keyboard shortcuts.

The page

The page has a wallpaper, the widgets you placed, and a toolbar at the bottom. The toolbar holds Customize, Clean, Bookmarks, History, and Downloads.

Right-click an empty part of the page for Customize, Change wallpaper, Clean mode, and Settings. Drop a picture (PNG, JPEG, or WebP) or a video (MP4 or WebM) onto the page to make it the wallpaper.

If you remove every widget, the page says This page is empty. and offers Add a widget, Change wallpaper, and Leave it empty.

Clock

Select the clock on the Widgets tab of the Customize panel to change 24-hour time, Show seconds, Show the date, Greeting, and Your name (up to 40 characters). By default the clock uses 24-hour time without seconds and shows the date, with no greeting.

The greeting follows the local time: Good morning from 05:00, Good afternoon from 12:00, Good evening from 18:00, and Late night from 23:00 until 05:00.

The clock is the only widget that can drop its card background. Turn Backing off to show it straight on the wallpaper.

Type in the search box and press Enter:

  • A web address (http or https, or a bare host name such as example.com) opens in the current tab.
  • Anything else goes to Chrome's default search engine. Change the engine in Chrome's own settings; Tabmori follows it.

Nothing is requested while you type. Two prefixes search other places:

  • / searches this computer. Type / and pick a scope: History, Bookmarks, Downloads, Links, or Notes. Typing the full name and a space, such as /history , also selects it. History, Bookmarks, and Downloads need their source turned on; see Sidebars. View all … results here opens the matching sidebar, or an overlay on the page for Links and Notes.
  • @ searches a site. Type @ and pick one of your site shortcuts. Results open in the current tab, or choose Open in new tab.

Add site shortcuts in Settings › Search and shortcuts › Site shortcuts. You can keep up to 20. Each has a name (1–20 characters), a shortcut word (1–20 letters, digits, or Chinese characters, not already used and not a scope name), and an address template that starts with https:// or http:// and contains exactly one {query}, for example https://github.com/search?q={query}. {query} must come after the host name, in the path, query, or fragment. Try it opens the address for a test word in a new tab.

Click Add a link, enter the Web address (http or https, without a user name or password) and an optional Name, then add it. The same address cannot be added twice. Remove a link with its × button. Links open in the current tab.

Until you grant the site-icons permission, Chrome asks for it each time you add a link. Your link is kept whatever you answer. Until the permission is granted, links show a letter instead of an icon. With it, icons come from Chrome's local icon cache, not from the network.

Layouts and the content view

Tabmori places widgets on a grid of whole cells and keeps a separate layout for each page mode:

Page modeBaseline gridUsed when the page is at least
Regular16 × 8 cells1396 × 752 pixels
Compact12 × 6 cells904 pixels wide and 508 pixels tall (516 when the page is 1280 pixels or wider)
Content viewNo gridAnything smaller

The baseline is the smallest grid of each mode. The page fills the window with as many whole cells as fit (84-pixel steps in the regular mode, 72 in the compact mode) and centers the grid, so a larger window has more cells than the baseline.

Sizes are CSS pixels, so page zoom changes which mode you get. The mode changes once a resize has settled.

The compact layout starts as an automatic arrangement of the regular one. The first time it appears, the page shows Compact layout arranged for this window with an Adjust link. Once you edit the compact layout, it is kept on its own.

In the content view, the page shows Small window: content view is active and one widget at a time. Use Choose a widget to switch between them. You can use and edit widget content there, but you cannot place or move widgets; make the window larger to do that.

Arrange widgets

Open Customize › Widgets.

  • Add a widget. Click a tile under Add, then choose a place on the page and click Place here. A clock, search, or quick-links widget already on the page shows Already added.
  • Edit a widget. Select it under Existing widgets to change its settings, pin it with Keep in clean mode, or use Remove from this layout / Place in layout.
  • Delete a widget. Click its delete button and confirm. Deleting removes the widget and its content from both layouts. A message offers Undo right after.

While the Widgets tab is open on the regular or compact layout, a miniature of the whole page, the layout playground, appears next to the panel:

  • Drag a widget to move it. It snaps to whole cells; dropping on another widget swaps them, and Doesn't fit here means there is no room.
  • Drag one of the eight handles to resize it.
  • With a widget focused, the arrow keys move it and Shift + arrow keys resize it.

Each move or resize is one undo step. The playground edits only the layout for the current page mode.

Clean mode

Click Clean or press C to hide the widgets and keep only the wallpaper. Widgets with Keep in clean mode stay. In clean mode the toolbar shrinks to Return to widgets, which fades after a few seconds and returns when you move the pointer or use the keyboard. Typing any character, including C, starts a search. Press Esc or click Return to widgets to bring the widgets back.

Keyboard shortcuts

These work when no text field has focus.
