Chrome colours

Match Chrome's window colours to the page with one of Chrome's own tiles, or with an exact-colour theme file.

Tabmori never changes Chrome's look by itself; Chrome does not allow an extension to do that. Instead, the Chrome colours tab of the Customize panel shows you which of Chrome's own colours matches the page, and opens the Chrome page where you choose it.

Pick a Chrome colour

The tab shows a preview of the Chrome window and Chrome's own 16 colour tiles: Default colour, Default grey, 13 named colours, and Custom colour with a hue.

Auto selects the tile nearest your wallpaper. Click another tile to choose it instead; click the ringed tile again to go back to Auto.

  1. Click Pick this tile in Chrome.
  2. Click Open colour settings. Chrome opens its profile settings page, chrome://settings/manageProfile, in a new tab.
  3. On that page, click the ringed tile. Tabmori tells you its row and position. For Custom colour, drag the slider to the hue shown.

Chrome recolours at once, and your other signed-in computers follow. To undo, click Default colour on the same Chrome page. Back to Chrome's default look → opens that page too.

Nothing needs to be installed for this route, and Tabmori asks for no permission.

Exact colours (advanced)

Chrome's tiles are close, not exact. To use the wallpaper's exact colours, click Exact colours (advanced) →.

Choose the Colour (Auto from the wallpaper, or a Hex value), Light or dark, and Strength, then click Apply to all of Chrome…:

  1. Click Generate the theme file. The first time, Chrome asks for the downloads permission once. Tabmori then writes a colour-only Chrome theme to Downloads/Tabmori 主题/<theme name>/manifest.json. The folder name is the same in every interface language. Generating again for the same theme overwrites the file.
  2. Click Show in folder if you want to see the file. Then click Open the extensions page (chrome://extensions) and turn on Developer mode at the top right.
  3. Click Load unpacked and choose the theme folder.

The theme appears in Chrome as Tabmori · <theme name>. It contains colours only. The tab shows Last generated with the theme name and time.

Things to know about this route:

  • It does not sync to your other computers.
  • To undo, go to Chrome's Settings › Appearance and choose Reset to default. Turning on Use device theme in Chrome also switches these colours off.
  • If Chrome asks at startup whether to disable developer-mode extensions, choose Keep.

The downloads permission is the same one the Downloads sidebar uses. You can remove it with Save Chrome theme files in Settings › Data sources and permissions; see Sidebars.
