Notes

Writing in note cards, the expanded page, blocks, Markdown shortcuts, local media, import and export, and autosave.

A page can hold any number of note widgets. Add one from Customize › Widgets. Each note saves itself as you type.

Write in the card

Click a note to start writing. Press Esc to stop editing, or F6 to reach the expand button.

To give a note more room, click the expand button or press Ctrl + Shift + Enter. The note opens as a full page with A4 proportions; its header shows the date and the character count. Press Esc or Ctrl + Shift + Enter to put it back on the page.

On the expanded page, the page-options menu holds:

  • Small text, Full width, and Table of contents.
  • Font: Default, Serif, or Mono.
  • Import… and Export, described below.

Insert blocks

Type / at the start of a block or after a space to open the block menu. With a Chinese input method, 、 works too. Type to filter, use the arrow keys to choose, and press Enter.

GroupBlocks
Basic blocksParagraph, Heading 1–4, Bulleted list, Numbered list, Task list, Quote, Callout, Code block, Divider
More blocksToggle list, Toggle heading 1–3, Content tabs, Button, Table, Contents, Block equation, Inline math, Link, Bookmark
ColumnsTwo or more columns side by side
Local mediaImage, Video, Audio, File

Notes on some blocks:

  • Code block. Pick the language from the block's header, and use Copy to copy the code. A code block set to Mermaid also draws the diagram. If a line has an error, the block says which line.
  • Block equation and Inline math use TeX.
  • Task list. Each item has its own checkbox.
  • Links must start with http:// or https:// and cannot contain a user name or password.

Markdown shortcuts

Type these at the start of a paragraph or heading:

TypeResult
# to ####, then a spaceHeading 1–4
-, *, or +, then a spaceBulleted list
1. then a spaceNumbered list
[] or [ ], then a spaceTask list

```Code block. Type a language name such as ts right after it and press Enter to set the language.
---Divider
Inline: **bold**, *italic* or _italic_, `code`, and ~~strikethrough~~. Chinese input-method forms such as 【】 for a task list and 1。 for a numbered list work as well.
You can also paste Markdown, including Markdown copied from VS Code and editors built on it.
Format and move blocks
  • Selection bar. Select text to show Bold, Italic, Underline, Strikethrough, Inline code, Text color (red, orange, green, or blue), and Link. Alt + F10 moves the focus into the bar.
  • Block handle. Drag the handle beside a block to move it. Click it, or press Ctrl + /, for block actions: Turn into, Color, Duplicate, Move up, Move down, and Delete.
Local media
Images, video, audio, and files are stored on this computer with the note.
TypeFormatsLargest file
ImagePNG, JPEG, WebP25 MB
VideoMP4, WebM100 MB
AudioAudio files100 MB
FileAny100 MB
All local media together, wallpapers included, is limited to 200 MB, the most a backup can hold.
Import and export
  • Import… accepts a Markdown file or a Notion export .zip. If some files in the archive cannot be imported, Tabmori says how many.
  • Export downloads the note as a .zip file in Notion's export layout: a Markdown file, plus a folder with the note's media when it has any.
Saving
Notes save automatically on this computer. The status reads Saved on this computer.
  • A note holds up to 1,100,000 characters. If a note goes over, it is not saved until you shorten it, and the note says by how much. A paste that would go over is trimmed, with Undo paste.
  • If the same note was changed in another tab, the note says This item was also changed in another tab. Use Review changes to choose Use saved version or Use this page's content.
